OVERVIEW: The F17P Mod 2 is a heavyweight, wire-guided torpedo developed by France for export, designed for offensive use from both submarines and surface ships. It features active/passive acoustic homing and NATO-standard 550 mm compatibility.

DETAILS: The “F” denotes French origin, “17” refers to its generation in the national torpedo development line, “P” stands for “export” (présentation export), and “Mod 2” identifies the second iteration of the F17P series. Developed in the mid-1980s, the F17P Mod 2 uses electric propulsion with silver-zinc batteries and incorporates both wire and fiber-optic guidance, along with an active/passive acoustic seeker for terminal homing. It is equipped with a 250 kg high-explosive warhead and compatible with standard 550 mm torpedo tubes. The system was designed to offer export customers a modern and flexible torpedo for anti-ship and anti-submarine missions.

Compared to earlier versions, the Mod 2 added active homing capability and improved guidance electronics while maintaining compatibility with submarine and shipboard launch platforms.

TYPE: Heavyweight Torpedo

FUNCTION: The F17P Mod 2 is guided during its initial phase via wire or fiber-optic link, then switches to active or passive acoustic homing to locate and engage its target. It is used against both enemy submarines and surface combatants in open-sea and coastal waters.
